BROADBAND CRUX

While there are some moves in getting Broadband services into Connemara, it appears that the quality of the telephone equipment in the area may greatly restrict the range of such services.

Eircom is installing its DSL system in four areas in Connemara - Cama, Clifden, Oughterard and Carraroe. However, some experts say that the signal will flot reach out very far - or that it wilI be unsatisfactory - because the telephone system is not sufficiently weIl developed.

Meanwhile, the Digiweb service that was brought into Carna and Clifden last February ran into difficulties last week. Digiweb had what were described as "contractual issues" with the company that links it to the satelite. The service was out for most of the week.

In the meantime, a meeting about the extension and development of the broadband system in Connemara - organised by Galway County Council - is to be held in Maam Cross soon. This was agreed following a proposai by Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig that was seconded by Councillor Seán Ó Tuairisg at this weeks meeting of the Council. Údarás na Gaeltachta are also being asked to become involved in this meeting. A date wilI be fixed for the meeting soon.
