Plea to Údarás to back plan for swim pool in Connemara

The whole of Connemara, north and south, has no public swimming pool but the Gaeltacht Authority, Údarás na Gaeltachta has decided to row-in behind a campaign to secure one.

However, for Údarás to grant aid any public pooi it bas to be within the Gaeltacht boundary. The proposai that the Authority would get involved in such a campaign was put by Seosamh Ó Cuaig, recently voted back onto the Board as an independent member.

Speaking at the first meeting of the new Board, Mr. Ó Cuaig said it was hard to believe that Connemara, with a population bigger than the whole of County Leitrim (in fact the area bas 5,000 more on their voting register than Leitrim) wouldn't bave such a facility.

"Why doesn't Connemara bave a public swimming pool? Other towns aIl over the East side of the county are served witb public pools. I can't understand why we stili don't have one.

"Galway County Council has intentions of building a pool in Connemara and I propose that we co-operate with them on the project. Tbere's no reason why we wouldn't be in a position to belp provide such a facility," be said.

Cllr. Ó Cuaig, said that councillors had recently gone on a fact finding visit to the recently completed swimming pool in Ballinasloe and a similar project was well underway in Loughrea.

The proposai was supported by Councillor Connie Ní Fhatharta wbo said that it was long overdue and a very necessary facility. She suggested that it would be built on a Gaeltacht site and that this is where the Údarás would be able to belp.

Tim Quinn, a Mayo member of the Board, said be too would be aIl for providing such a facility, as it was such amenities that belped to keep young people in the area.

Pádraig Ó bAoláin, CEO of Údarás, said that there would be no point in them getting involved in such a project unless the swimming pool was earmarked for a Gaeltacbt site.

Casla molta mar shuíomh lárnach do linn snámha i gConamara

Chun freastal ar linn snámha, ní mór do mhuintir Chonamara an t-aistear a dhéanamh go dtí na Forbacha, go dtí an Clochán nó isteach go cathair na Gailllimhe.

Ag cruinniú de chuid Chomhairle Ceantair na nOileán, an tseachtain seo a d'imigh tharainn, ritheadh rún ag tacú leis an moladh go lonnófaí linn snámha do Chonamara i gCasla.

Dúradh go mba bhreá leis an gComhairle Ceantair a leithéid a lonnú i gCeantar na nOileán ach gurbh é Casla an áit ab fheiliúnaí de bharr chomh lárnach is atá sé do phobal Chonamara trí chéile.

"Tá sé go hiomlán riachtanach. Tá leatrom á dhéanamh ar mhuintir Chonamara," arsa Trevor Ó Clochartaigh, bainisteoir Chomhairle Ceantair na nOileán, le Lá, inné.

"Is náireach an rud é nach bhfuil áiseanna linn snámha ón gClochán go dtí na Forbacha.

"Tá sé craiceáilte go mbeadh na scuainí gasúr gar don bhfarraige gan áis chun traenáil snámha.

"Tá sé in am ag na comhairleoirí contae é a bhrú chun cinn agus é a chur chun cinn go scioptha," a dúirt sé.

Ar dhuine de na daoine atá ag éileamh, le fada an lá, go gcuirfí tús le pleanáil do linn snámha, tá an comhairleoir Seosamh Ó Cuaig.

Cuireadh an moladh san áireamh i socrú comhaontais theicniúil na comhairle is tá sé mar pholasaí anois ann.

"Tá cúig mhíle níos mó ar liosta na vótóirí i gConamara ná mar atá i gCo Liatroma agus fós, níl linn snámha poiblí ann, cé go bhfuil cinn bhreátha in oirthear an chontae. Chuir mé chun cinn é ag ceann de chruinnithe na Comhairle Contae, áit ar mhol mé comhoibriú idir an Chomhairle agus an tÚdarás," arsa an tUas Ó Cuaig.

"Ag an chruinniú deir-eanach de chuid an Údaráis, dúradh go raibh na comhráití tosnaithe," a dhearbhaigh sé.

Deir an tUas Ó Cuaig gurb í an chéad chéim a chinnfear ná tús a chur le staidéar agus go roinnfear costas an staidéir seo idir an tÚdarás agus an Chomhairle Contae.
