Crossroads Danger

There have been further calls for safety measures at the junction in Recess where the road leads off towards Cashel and Carna from the N59 - the main clifden to Galway Road. Local people have regarded this junction at Recess as dangerous for a long time past but there has been no notable response from the County Council.

Some near misses have been reported again recently, and the danger arises when drivers coming from the Clifden direction come around a bend about 200 metres west of the junction and see a long straiglit in front of them. Since the crossroads is not a striking or noticeable feature, drivers who do not know the road well may move to overtake other cars not knowing that somebody in front hias indicated to go right onto Cashel or Camna. The overtaking driver may see the situation too late and run into the side of the car turning right.

The Community Forum in Carna has now asked the Chairman of the Roads Committee in Galway County Council, Seosamh Ó Cuaig, and member of the National Roads Authomity, Connie Ní Fhtharta, to do something about the danger. The Community Forum suggested widening the road, putting in a lane for the cars tuming might, and getting good signposting in place.
