Major public backing for new road among Connemara public

There has been another major development in the campaign for a new road from west Connemara to Galway City. Connemara County Councillors were told at their meeting on Monday that Galway County Council is now carrying out a study to bring the road to Screebe. This would bring the new road abont eight miles further west than Rosaveal and into the west Connemara area.

Meanwhile. a poll carried out tor Raidio na Gaeltachta shows overwhelming support for the new road to Connemara. In a scientifically based poll carried out in the Constituency of Galway West, over 80% said they were in favour of a new road.

Galway County Council Roads Committee Chairman, Seosamh Ó Cuaig said that what was needed now was the appointrnent of a design team to plan the road. "I'm disapointed that the County Council has not yet got the go-ahead from the Department of the Environment to appoint the design team,' Councillor Ó Cuaig said "but I expect good news on that soon.'

Meanwhile, Fóram lorras Aithneach in Carna - that has been to the fore in campaigning for the road - said that the planning needed to go ahead fast so that the road would not be delayed for long. They also said that the shortcuts to Sereebe proposed by Connernara County Councillors should be used so as to shorten journey times for people in west Connemara.

The Údarás na Gaeltaehta Regional Board also adopted a motion this week - proposed by Councillor Connie Ní Fátharta - looking tor support for the building of the new road from Galway to Connemara.
