Ó CUAIG ON VEC

Connemara Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig has been elected onto the Galway County Vocational Education Committee. Councillor Ó Cuaig got the unanimous support of Galway County Councillors Iast Friday to fil a vacancy on the VEC.

Ó Cuaig, who is also a member of the Údarás na Gaeltachta board, is the Chairman of the Galway County Councils Roads committee and is a member of the Western Regional Authority and of the Border Midland and Western Assembly

MAJOR IRISH STUDY

A 4-volume study of the lrish i langauge in the Cill Chiaráin and Carna parish was presented to the President, Mary McAleese on Monday. The work is entitied "The Irish of Iorras Aithneach, County Galway" and the author is Briain Ó Curnáin. Mr Ó Curnáin has studied speaking nuances, pronunciations in various townlands and areas in the Carna and Cill Chiaráin area and the changes in the language and speaking patterns over 5 generations. This is one of the most exhaustive studies ever undertaken about the Irish language in a Connemara parish.

It also includes a CD of some of the finest Irish speakers and storytellers from the parish collected from various sources.

Mr O Curnáin was accompanied by Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig at the presentation in Áras an Uachtaráin.

Some members of the Ó Cualáin famiiy from Muighnis were also guests - the family of Seán Choilm - with which Briain Ó Curnáin was closeiy associated during his studies.
