Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig says that there are "no
difficulties that couhd not be sorted out" in getting an extra lake into the source for the Cill
Chiaráin/Carna water scheme.
He has been in contact with Galway County Council about it this week again and he said the first
study has been completed.
This issue has come up because of Galway County Council's decision to extend the Cil
Chiaráin/Carna water scheme to Roundstone. Work is expected to begin on the extension of the
scheme very soon. This is in response to the difficulties in Roundstone where there are high levels
of cryptosporidium in the water system.
There are fears in Carna and Ciii Chiaráin that there could be a shortage of water as Loch an
Óir, the main source, almost ran dry a few years ago. It was only serving part of the Cill
Chiaráin/Carna area at that time. Fóram lorras Aithneach - the Community Forum - in Carna
requested that a pump and piping system be set up in nearby Loch Scannimh so that water couid be
brought in from there if the other lakes were drying out during fine weather.
The County Council has now got a report on that. Councillor Ó Cuaig said this shouid be arranged. "It makes sense for everybody in
Cill Chiaráin, Cama, Cashel and Roundstone that the scheme would be right from the start", he said.
