Councillors Josie Conneely
and Seosamh Ó Cuaig went to Galway County Council headquarters on Monday to press the case for another lake to be joined to the water source for the Carna/Cil Chiaráin Water Scheme.
Councillors Ó Cuaig and Conneely pointed out that there were serious concerns that a time would come when there would be a water shortage because of the extension of the scheme to Roundstone.
"The facts are that Loch an Oir went dry some years ago", Councillor Ó Cuaig said "when there was oniy a part of the Ciii Chiaráin and Carna area getting water from the scheme. The scheme has been extended to a much wider area now"
Councillor Conneely said that it was better to ensure that there was enough supply.
"People m Roundstone - as well as Kilkerrin, Carna and Cashel - will just have problems again if a shortage of water happens at the lakes" Josie Conneely said. "I don't think it's a big job to link another lake and have it on standby if needed."
Arrangements were madefor a meeting between the County Manager and the
Carna Community Forum -Fóram lorras Aithneach - to
deal with the matter soon.
The Carna Community Forum have had previous meetings with County Council officials as far back as last May about the issue and have continued to campaign for an additional lake in the source.
Meanwhile, there have been complaints from business peopie and people in the tourism sector about the closure of roads and diversions while the water scheme is being brought to Roundstone.
Local hoteliers say it's a blow to business.
The Carna Community Forum has said that its obvious that the extension of the Cill Chiaráin/Carna scheme to Roundstone was a panic measure when cryptosporidium was spotted in the Roundstone scheme.
Nobody with any knowledge of the area would have planned to close roads in a tourism area like this at the
busiest time of the year.
Meanwhile, Gaiway County Council is looking for planning permission to build a reservoir in Roundstone.
However, that will have to come before the County Councillors and the issue of the extra lake at the source in Carna is likely to become a factor then.
