Ó Cuaig sets out key list of demands! OUTGOING Údarás na Gaeltachta
member, County Councillor, Seosamh Ó Cuaig said
this week he would use these and his position on the Western Regional Authority
to further the interests of the
people of the Gaeltacht. Mr. Ó Cuaig was the second person elected from the Connemara Electoral Area in
last year's Council elections. He was subsequently one of the main architects
of the technical Coalition which commands a majority in the Council. He
negotiated a 15 point plan for Connemara and the Aran Islands as part of the
deal. Mr. Ó Cuaig said he now believed there was an excellent opportunity to deliver
substantial benefits to the area by combining his work on the Údarás with his
work on the Council, on the other Authorities and on the various
sub-committees. His 18 point policy plans for
the Údarás election includes - the recovery of the money deducted by the
Government from the Údarás budget since 2002, a broadband system in all areas,
a network of children's playgrounds and leisure facilities for teenagers,
crèches and playschools, and an Irish language policy which will have community
support. He said he was also supporting
the rights of small fishermen, a new road from West Connemara to Galway, a
visitors' centre at Pearse's Cottage, Ros Muc, a public swimming pool in
Connemara, a solution to the sewage problem in An Spidéal, a multi-purpose
leisure centre in an Cheathrú Rua, a modern harbour in Ros a' Mhil and the
development of industries on the adjacent Údarás sites, a further development
of third level education in the Gaeltacht, a sensible housing policy in
Bearna and a targeted policy to
encourage Irish speakers in areas where Irish is not the community language. Curadh
