Meeting with NRA on roads is vital step, says councillor

THE CHAIRMAN of the Connemara Group of County Councillors, Seán Ó Tuairisg (Fianna Fáil) has said that the forthcoming meeting with the National Roads Authority about the Connemara roads is a major step in the right direction. A new road from West Connemara to Galway city, the N. 59 Galway - Clifden road and other matters are expected to be on the agenda.

Councillor Ó Tuairisg said that it was now vital that Connemara be "opened Up" with a network of top class roads. It would give life to communities in Connemara, insofar as many people could travel to and from work in the City and live in their own areas. It would also promote the development of jobs and industry." he said. The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, 83amon O Cufv TD announced this week that the meeting with the National Roads Authority Chief Executive, Fred Barry, would be held at the Departments headquarters in Furbo on the 1Oth of October. This meeting has caused a flurry of political activity with Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig and Minister Éamon Ó Cuív announcing on the same morning last month that they were both in the process of arranging the meeting with Mr Fred Barry.

In the meantime, Connemara County Councillors agreed unanimously that aIl Galway West T.D.s and Senators should be invited to this meeting with on the agenda.

Minister Ó Cuív has now confirmed that ail Conamara County Councillors, ail Gaiway West T.D.s, and Senators and Galway County Council engineers and officiais are being invited to the meeting in Furbo.

In a Raidio na Gaeltachta interview, Councillor Seán Ó Tuairisg said that a number of demands have been made about Connemara roads and that it would be an uphill battle ahead. However, he said there could be real possibilities in looking at a number of ways of going about the task.

Councillor Seosamh Ó Cuaig said that he hoped the meeting with the NRA Chief would be a very important one for Connemara. "I am on the save wavelength as Councillor O Tuairisg and I hope his comments will be supported by everybody at the meeting. From there on, we wiIl want action," he said
