ÉIR in ionad IRL
Tosaíodh ar an bhfeachtas seo ag Máirtín Tom Seáinín, láiritheoir de chuid Raidío na Gaeltachta, sa
bhfómhair.
Mar atá in Éirinn anois!
Pláta ón nGearmáin anois.

Is mian linn "ÉIR" a bheith ar na plátaí clárúcháin ar gach carr in ionad an "IRL" atá ann go
hiondúil anois.
Is mian linn go mbeidh an dlí athraithe roimh deireadh 2009. Mar cuid den fheachtas seo
tá greamán beag le 12 Réaltanna na hEorpa agus na litreacha ÉIR ar gur
féidir é a greammiú ós cionn an "IRL" ar an bpláta
chlárúcháin. Is féidir na greamáin seo a fháil
díreach ó Mháirtín Tom Sheáinín ag an seoladh sa
chéad colún eile ar dheis!
Nóta staire!
B'é "SE" (Saorstáit Éireann) mar phláta
idirnáisiúnta ar charanna na hÉireann ó 1922 go 1938. Idir 1938 agus
1962 úsáidíodh "ÉIR" ar an bpláta. Sa bhliain 1950 mhol Bernard
Commons TD sa Dáil go scrúdófar "the tourist identification plate bearing
the letters EIR...with a view to the adoption of identification letters more readily associated with
this country by foreigners".
Faoi dheireadh athríodh an dlí i mí Mean
Fomhair 1962 agus tá "IRL" air ó shin.
Tá na litreacha "EI" mar litreacha chláraithe ar eitileáin atá cláraithe in Éirinn ó 1947.
Úsáidtear "Éire" agus "Ireland" ar ainmchláir na tire ag cruinnithe den Aontas Eorpach ó glacadh leis an nGaeilge mar teanga oifigiúil ann.

The campaign was launched two months ago by Radió na Gaeltachta presenter Máirtín Tom Sheáinín, who
said yesterday: "Our aim is to have all Irish car registration plates changed, in order to display
the name of the country in Irish, instead of the English version which is now in general use. We
have begun the new year by having the new EIR stickers placed by our supporters on several vehicles,
with the consent of the owners, and we hope to see EIR introduced officially, before the end of
2009."
He accepted there were some legislative avenues to be explored before such a change could be
officially made.
Mr Sheáinín (sic) said some members of the group had been using the EIR sticker since the campaign was
launched.
