    1. A note from Anthony Philbin in Kilmainham Gaol, who was one of those accused of the Maamtrasna murders to the Crown Solicitor. He decided after that to become a witness for the Crown against the other accused.

    From the Sub Inspector, Cong R.I.C. to Dublin Castle (18 Aug 1882)
    "Report recd., here that last night John Joyce, his wife, mother and daughter were murdered & two boys wounded in their own house at Maamtrasna, Finny. Am starting for the scene."
